Comparison of oscillatory wall shear stress in the abdominal aorta of men and women: relationship to abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) development
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Numerous animal and human studies have confirmed a relationship between inflammation, wall shear stress (WSS, the frictional force of fluid felt at a vessel wall) and vascular pathologies. These studies suggest the importance of WSS as a predictive factor in evaluating an individual’s risk of developing vascular disease. There have been several observational studies which indicate that men are four times more likely to develop abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) than women. Based on the known link between oscillatory WSS and aneurysm dilation, we conducted a study to investigate differences in the WSS patterns in the abdominal aortas of men and women. We utilized a method of measuring WSS which combines an analytical solution to the Navier-Stokes equations and phase contrast magnetic resonance (PCMR) derived flow waveforms. The hypothesis was that women would have a lower values of pro-inflammatory oscillatory WSS than men.

Frequency of Complications Following Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in Tehran Sina Hospital, 2011-2019
Background and purpose: Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) is a localized enlargement of infrarenal abdominal aorta. Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is a surgical method introduced for AAA repair. This study, for the first time in Iran, investigated the complications and mortality rate associated with EVAR. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, medical records were reviewed...
متن کاملA longitudinal comparison of hemodynamics and intraluminal thrombus deposition in abdominal aortic aneurysms.
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is often accompanied by in traluminal thrombus (ILT), which complicates AAA progression and risk of rupture. Patient-specific computational fluid dynamics modeling of 10 small human AAA was performed to investigate relations between hemodynamics and ILT progression. The patients were imaged using magnetic resonance twice in a 2- to 3-yr interval. Wall content dat...
متن کاملComputational model of abdominal aortic aneurysm inception and evolution
Incidence of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is increasing in the aging society of the western world. Development of AAA is mostly asymptomatic and is characterized by a bulge in the abdominal aorta. However, AAA may suddenly rupture, which results in an internal bleeding associated with a high mortality rate. Patients with AAA undergo regular screening until treatment indication. To date, stat...
متن کاملDetecting Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm using Bio-Computing Technology
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a localized dilatation of the abdominal aorta .It occurs when there is a increase in the normal diameter of the blood vessels by more than 50 percent. Approximately 90 percent of abdominal aortic aneurysms occur infrarenally , but they can also occur pararenally or suprarenally. This is because of some catastrophic outcome. Due to this, the blood flow is exagg...
متن کاملDrug Therapy for Small Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Dear Editor,Abdominal aortic aneurysm is often asymptomatic, less recognized, and causes considerable mortality and morbidity, if missed. The incidence varies from country to country and the occurrence is influenced by modifiable (smoking, coronary heart disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and prolonged steroid therapy) and non-modifiable risk factors (increasing age, male gender, and positive...
